Dead Garden Day 7. (From Facebook)
Dead Garden Day 7. November 21st, 2010 (Furthur.)
A bit of a curveball for today’s edition of the 10 Dead Garden Days. While not a Grateful Dead show, Furthur played a show at Madison Square Garden in November of 2010, part of a two night stand in New York City. These shows were just two of the four shows that the East Coast saw on that November swing, as the band treated their Midwest fans to a number of shows on that tour.
The second of the two Garden shows, which happened to be the final show of the Fall tour, started off right with a hot pairing of Truckin>Cumberland Blues. Following those two numbers was a rare gem, Any Road. The George Harrison song was sung well by John Kadlecik and was a welcomed addition to the band’s repertoire as a unique cover song. Ending the set was the always danceable Goin’ Down the Road Feelin Bad, which literally had the Garden rocking and swaying.
The band entered the stage for second set to a welcomed applause and cheers and tuned up for a minute or two before Bobby started his signature guitar intro to Weather Report Suite. An epic piece off of the 1973 album “Wake of the Flood,” this was the first time Furthur had played the Suite since their formation in September of the previous year. However, it was not played in full sequence, as the band slipped a cover of Pink Floyd’s Time in before Let it Grow. Phil really got his chance in the spotlight on Unbroken Chain, which featured some very heavy jamming towards the end of the song. Perhaps the highlight of the show came as the band dived into Morning Dew. The song was played DEAD-on, and the spirit of Garcia was evident at the Garden during that moment. As an encore, the band kept the Jerry vibe going with the bittersweet classic, Brokedown Palace. Bob did his best to pay homage to his lost brother and band mate as he sang the line “Fare thee well, fare thee well, I love you more than words can tell…” The emotion in the arena was strong and left many heads with tears in their eyes.
So while this was not a Grateful Dead show, there was certainly a Grateful Dead feeling in New York City that weekend, and there were shadows of the many memorable show the Dead played at Madison Square Garden.
Furthur will return to MSG this Thursday, November 10th. Get in the Groove will continue to count down the 10 Dead Garden days all this week….
