Phish - “Mike’s Song > I am Hyrdogen > Weekapaug Groove”
11.22.97 - Hampton Coliseum - Hampton, VA

When all you have to do all day is get ready for a show, it’s a GREAT day. That was the case 14 years ago today. I woke up in some random Hampton hotel and the agenda was to get ready for night two in Hampton. Before night two began, we found a local dive - Harpoon Larry’s with a good raw bar and pre-game atmosphere. Harpoon Larry’s became an instant classic and I’ve been back several times in later runs. It’s off the beaten path, but I recommend it next time you see Phish in Hampton.

We didn’t miss the opener on this night and for that I am grateful. If I had to choose my favorite Phish song, it would be “Mike’s Song”. For Phish to open with it, well it was this live music junkie’s wet dream. With the “Hood” that followed “Mike’s Groove”, this show was already approaching legendary status, halfway through the first set. 

The only disappointing point in the show was the encore, but no one cared. After this two night run at Hampton, the mothership had become one of the places that you had to see Phish play - just like the Dead before them.

Nice pick. Love a good Mikes Groove. 97 may be one of the best years as well…
